Goodbye
A Christina E Lupin story
Summary: Ainsley and Remus have been dating for a few years but after a near fatal accident, Remus makes a choice. Is that choice logical?
-------------Goodbye----------------
Remus Lupin perched himself on a plastic chair beside his girlfriend's hospital bed, listening to the beeping of the monitoring charms. Above Ainsley Townshend's head, a red line copied the movements of her heart, much like a Muggle electrocardiograph machine. It also measured her heartbeat and breathing. Gulping, he turned to look at his shaking hands. Why did this happen? He should be the one on the bed, clinging onto life, not her.
For a moment, he forgot that he was by her bedside, his mind flashing back to the horrific scene.
"Get out of here!" Ainsley shouted, sending a stunning spell at a nearby Death Eater.
"I'm not leaving without you!" Remus shouted back, his heart in his throat. "I will not leave until you do. We are in this together. You know much you mean to me."
Ainsley's eyes were sad. "I know, but I am trained in dueling and combat, not you. You are the person at risk here, not me. Now go!"
Before he could open his mouth, a Death Eater had transfigured a twig into a long silver sword. With a smirk, he threw it at the werewolf, not counting on his hood falling from his hidden face. But Ainsley was not worried about the man's face. She shouted at her boyfriend and ran full speed toward him. The sword was inches away from Remus, but he was shoved down in time. His eyes, which had been filled with acceptance, were filled with horror as he watched his girlfriend taking the sword for him, the blade slicing through her chest, the tip just barely poking out of her back.
Remus shook himself from the memory and he wiped his eyes. He would never forget Ainsleys' golden eyes looking down at him, love shining in the depths.
"Re-mus?"
He nearly stopped breathing. Her voice, though filled with pain and obviously shaking, was music to his ears.
"Sweetheart?" he asked softly, leaning closer, gripping her hand tighter. "Can you hear me?"
Ainsley slightly nodded her head and winced. Her mouth worked a little but finally settled into a smile. The werewolf just had to smile back and he could feel tears pricking his eyes again.
"You scared me, Ainsley. No, you terrified me. I almost thought I would lose you."
"Ne...ver," Ainsley whispered.
"Shh... don't talk."
For a moment, the two stared at each other, not saying a word. Then, Remus slowly let go of his mate's hand and he leaned back, mentally forming what he was going to say next.
"While you were... out... I had a chance to think about things. About us," he revealed when he saw the question in her eyes. "I... I can't tell you how it felt when you were stabbed, taking a blow that was meant for me. I... it set some things into motion that I have never thought about before until now. Just being around me is just shy of a death wish and it almost succeeded in happening. Ainsley, I love you, but I can't..... this..." Remus broke off and he swallowed.
"What... you...saying?" Ainsley asked, her usually warm golden eyes chilling to a duller gold color.
He couldn't look at her any longer. Just looking at her nearly unraveled him.
"What I'm saying, is that I want us to see other people. Break up. Stop being around each other."
Ainsley closed her eyes and nearly let a tear slip past her eyes. Gods, she couldn't believe this was happening. Her heart felt like it was ripping itself apart and her breathed skyrocketed, sending the monitoring charms into the alert mode.
Remus took back her hand and tried to calm her down, but the Healers came bursting in and demanded that he leave. With a sigh, he pressed a kiss to her knuckles and left, without looking back. He knew that if he looked back, he would crumble. He needed to stay resolved. Firm.
It took the Healers a few minutes to administer some calming draughts, but even then, it didn't help Ainsley. Once the door shut behind the Healers, she turned her head into her pillow and she cried. She cried heart-wrenching sobs that would have broken even the coldest person's heart. She whimpered his name into the pillow, begging him to come back and heal her broken heart.
But he never came.
